About Me

If you're reading this, you probably know who I am, but here's a little refreshser in case you forgot. The name's Jenna and I am a Junior at Barnard College and the Jewish Theological Seminary studying Psychology and Jewish Women and Gender Studies.

I decided to come to Senegal through the School of International Training because I wanted to discover what religious pluralism means in non-Western countries. I believe we have a lot to learn from non-Western countries, but instead we often impose our own values on such countries, thinking we are "bettering" them.

Well guess what, that's false. Senegal is one of the most religiously tolerant countries in the world, a value that the United States has a lot to learn from. So, this is what I hope to achieve through this blog; to show my friends, family, and anyone interested in reading, the truth about Senegal. No it is not a jungle, no it is not "uncivilized." This is just what our media has portrayed for years that we can't help but not let the lies and stereotypes seep into our minds.

Having said that, Senegal is one country in Africa and thus does not represent Africa as an entirety, because guess what, Africa is a continent, not a country! So please don't think this is an inside look at life in Africa, because even within Senegal there are so many ethnic groups, each with their own traditions and culture. My view is also limited to the cities to which I travel. So if you really want to see what it's like, come here for yourself because it's truly an exceptional place.
